Is it possible to freeze a live fish in water, then defrost it a few days later and expect it to be alive?

I've heard this is possible. So in theory, in a particularly severe winter with extremely low temperatures a lake may freeze completely solid for a period of time but when the thaw comes some fish may "live again" so to speak. I ask this because some lakes or lochs as I call them (I live in Scotland) are very shallow with alot of trout in them. In the winter these shallow lakes must freeze completely solid due to the very low temperatures we get, I often wonder how the fish can survive this. When spring comes there is always plenty of trout still there when I go fishing, how is this possible?
